The Business Case for Business Coaching
If you are looking for business ideas, I have researched 90+ business ideas: Canada Small Business OpportunitiesThe Platforming of Capitalism
Perspective
By the time business owners reach out to me as a business coach, they exhibit a broad spectrum of observable emotions. They tend to run a range of emotions including serious, solemn, pre-occupied and stressful emotions.
As I’ve had the opportunity to contemplate my career I’ve noticed a trend. The business coaching clients who consistently achieved the results they were aiming for, each had a few traits in common.
For the most part they were undaunted by unexpected setbacks, problems or difficulties. They had a way of operating which rode the fine edge of achievement and adventure. They were obsessed with learning and improvement.
In the start-up phase they had high expectations, excitement and passion. Over the course of time, entrepreneurs tend to move towards day-to-day routines, management, problem-solving, measurement and improvement.
Often they would tend to move away from the excitement and passion which was present as a start up.
Personal Growth = Business Growth
To the degree that you grow personally and professionally, so goes your business. So if you’re struggling, your business isn’t growing or you feel stuck — there is likely something you need to learn in order to turn things around.
TRAP: Remember, your business should work for you versus you working to keep the business running. Plus you deserve to have fun while doing it!
Self Reflection: A Key Business Skill
Self reflection is the practice of taking time to thoughtfully consider your thoughts, feelings, and actions. It can be used to gain insight into one's own personal growth, and to help identify areas where change is needed.
Self reflection can be done in many ways, such as journaling, talking to a friend or mentor, or engaging in mindfulness activities.
It can also be done by taking time to pause and reflect on challenges and successes, and to consider the impact of your actions. Self reflection can help to improve self-awareness and provide clarity on how to move forward.
Embrace A Sense of Adventure
As the business landscape continuously evolves, business owners must accelerate change to succeed. This involves staying ahead of trends, adapting to new technologies and strategies, and rethinking traditional business models.
Embracing new ideas and strategies, even if unfamiliar, is key.
Massive continuous change requires adaptation like never before. The good news is you can do this and have fun too, if you are willing to look at this journey as an adventure.
A Personal and Professional Development Path
In my 30+ years of working with entrepreneurs I have come to the realization that “To the degree that you grow personally and professionally, so goes your business.”
If your business is struggling, more than likely you are also likely struggling either on a personal or professional level. The first thing I do when working with business owners is to gauge where they are at on the self-awareness front.
Building self-awareness as a business owner and entrepreneur is very important to your long-term survival and key to continuous personal and professional growth.
The Entrepreneurial Paradox
There are many, many societal, familial and entrepreneurial expectations of business owners.

It’s cliche to say that societies expectations of an entrepreneur are legendary.
Entrepreneurs around the world are expected to be visionaries, pioneers, hero’s and wealthy. All while keeping the business afloat, themselves centred and serving others.
Easy easy right? Not so much actually.
The paradox is the lived experience of most entrepreneurs is they feeling insecure, worried, burdened, all while suffering from the Fear-of-Missing-Out (FOMO). Worried they will miss some important detail that could make or break their business. It’s stressful.
Since 2020 the pace of change has been accelerated by the pandemic. The same is true of the pressure, worries and concerns of entrepreneurs. Their reality is very different from the idealized Hollywood characterization.
The Entrepreneurs Reality
Most entrepreneurs reality is not anywhere close to the idealized hero portrayed in the media and Hollywood. Over the course of time they can develop a cynical outlook, fee drained and exhausted, overwhelmed, disillusioned, confused, suffering from a lack of self worth and feeling trapped in their business.
I saw an informal poll on Twitter of 1,500 entrepreneurs. They found 89% were feeling anxious, burned out, exhausted and fatigued either in the recent past or in the present. That translates to 9 out of 10 entrepreneurs who are striving to do their best for their business, themselves and others while dealing with burnout.
